About Sanma Province

Geography

Sanma Province is one of the six provinces of Vanuatu, located in the northern part of the archipelago. It has a land area of approximately 4,248 km². The main Town , Luganville, located on Espiritu Santo , is the second-largest city in Vanuatu after Port Vila. Sanma Province consists of three main islands: Espiritu Santo, Malo and Aore.

Population

According to the 2020 Vanuatu National Population and Housing Census, Sanma Province had a population of 60,884 people. The province exhibits a mix of urban and rural populations, with Luganville serving as the primary urban center. The remaining areas are predominantly rural, characterized by smaller communities and settlements.

Economy

The economy of Sanma Province is primarily based on agriculture, Livestock , and tourism. Luganville serves as a major export hub, handling a significant portion of Vanuatu's domestic exports. Local cooperatives and small enterprises contribute to the province's economic activity, particularly in agriculture and trade .
